Vivian Christine (McCoy) O’Neil

December 25, 1940 – April 10, 2025

Vivian Christine (McCoy) O’Neil, affectionately known as Chris, passed away peacefully on April 10, 2025, at the age of 84. Born on Christmas Day, 1940, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Chris spent her childhood in Port Lavaca, Texas, and later built a life in Cypress, Texas, before returning to her roots in Port Lavaca with her beloved husband, Jim O’Neil, who served as the Port Lavaca Harbor Master.

Chris was a woman of many passions and talents. Her creative spirit shone through her love of oil painting, which she generously shared by teaching others. A devoted gardener, she was an active member of the Houston Garden Club, cultivating beauty wherever she went. Her adventurous side thrived outdoors—whether waterskiing, boating, sailing, or helping design and build a cherished lake house for friends and family gatherings.

A lifelong advocate for animals, Chris rescued, fostered, and adopted countless dogs and cats, finding immense joy in their companionship. Her dedication to community extended to her volunteer work and the close friendships she nurtured at Grace Episcopal Church in Port Lavaca. In her later years, she delighted in playing bridge with dear friends and savoring quiet moments of connection.

Above all, Chris treasured her family. She was a devoted mother to her children, Susan and Jeremy, and a loving stepmother to Sean, Padraic, Jamie, and Mary. Her siblings—Jerry, Barbara, and Janey— along with their families, held a special place in her heart. Family reunions and holiday gatherings were her greatest joy, and her legacy lives on in her six children, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, who will forever cherish her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.

A private celebration of life will be held by her family. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to an animal rescue organization or Calhoun County Senior Citizens Association

"Her love was a garden—always growing, always giving."

Rest in peace, Chris. You will be deeply missed.
