Barry David Winston, MD

18 mars 1947 - 28 octobre 2025
Those we love never truly leave us. Their light continues to guide our way.
Barry David Winston, MD passed away on October 28, 2025 surrounded by his girls and held within a most mystical and divine embrace of love, truth, understanding and forgiveness. He was a great man, known for his gentle kindness and quiet strength. He had deep compassion for others and never judged anyone (except Democrats, of course). He was dependable and always at the ready to help - especially, when it came to the gastrointestinal arts. Who do you call when your stomach doesn't feel quite right? You call Dad. He was a devoted, highly skilled, and highly respected physician. Dad cured the GI ailments of the entire family, all our friends, and friends of friends. It is just another reason that we will all miss him so much.
Barry was born and raised in Galveston, Texas in a close-knit Jewish family alongside his younger sister, Renee, younger brother, Jaron, and a gaggle of cousins. Cousin Alan was older (R.I.P, Alan), followed by Barry. The young Winston and Lerner kids on the block adored him as their leader in trouble-making and stood by his side when he and Alan were busted for driving granddad's car at the tender age of 10 - one boy pushing the pedals and the other handling the wheel, and when he found cousin Lou "not guilty" at the neighborhood trial, and when he drove his dad's station wagon into the Galveston bay waters.
Dad was tall, handsome and impeccably dressed. He wore pink and made it look effortlessly masculine. He loved playing golf and had a reputation for throwing clubs when his game was off. He even managed to wrap a titanium golf club around a tree in a moment of passionate anger - a story told many times by his best friend, Joe Holmes, who was both frightened and impressed by the act (R.I.P, Joe).
Dad claimed he had a liquor for each chapter of his life. Beer was drunk from pools and puddles off the floor of the Tau Delt fraternity house (which apparently, was shared with a Jewish-friendly alligator and inspired some sort of ritualistic, tribal dancing called The Gator). In medical school it was bourbon. It was scotch in residency. There were many years of fine wines, followed by a lot of appletinis around grandkids. And, of course, margaritas were served throughout every decade and were preferably served pool-side.
At the time of his passing, Barry was the beloved husband of Christine. He and Christine share a truly one-of-a-kind bond. They have a connection that is rooted in a deep and abiding love held at the heart. Barry and Christine have one daughter together, Alexa. Alexa was the apple of his eye for the second act of his life and was given the nickname "dad's shadow". He felt such immense joy and pride for Alexa that really kept him going in his later years.
Barry is the former husband of Lenore Prudhomme. They shared many meaningful years and had two daughters together, Nicole and Erin. Lenore remembers her intense love for the young Barry, whom she called a real campus "stud" at UT Austin. Nicole remembers her dad's patience and protection when bribing the cops away at her house parties in high school. Erin remembers playing with his mustache in the 80s and a shared passion for basketball in the 90s, with dad recording her John Cooper School basketball games and scoring tickets to the Houston Rockets 1995 NBA finals, when we swept the Utah Jazz in 3 straight games. His grandsons, Ferris and Miles, will remember him sneaking them candy and rare coins and cash behind mommies back.
We all love you, Barry David Winston. We are blessed to have walked this earth with you. There is nothing but love for you here on this physical plane. You go run and play up there with God with legs that do not hurt and a mind that is quiet. Enjoy your peace. You have more than earned it.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service is planned for a later date in January 2026 and will be announced when ready.
