Ways you can honor Bruce's memory:
“A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP” - Leonard Nimoy
Bruce Chabot was born November 9, 1962 in Pomona, California. He grew up in Corpus Christi, Texas, where graduated from Incarnate Word Academy. He graduated from seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio. Bruce joined the service and served as a Naval Chaplain. In 1994, he moved to College Station, Texas. He received his Masters and Ph.D in English from Texas A&M University. He taught English classes at Texas A&M for many years. He was ordained as an Episcopal Priest and worked in parishes across central and east Texas, including Navasota, Huntsville, Woodville, Palestine, and more. He moved to Huntsville, Texas in 2013, the same year his daughter, Claire, started college at Sam Houston State University. He spent the remainder of his academic career teaching English at Sam Houston State University.
Bruce was an avid reader and consumer of media. He was passionate about Star Trek, the Hobbit, and spent many years working a booth at the Texas Renaissance Festival. You would find him on the stage or directing community theater productions. His love of fictional adventures was passed on through stories to the countless students he taught. He was beloved by his students, his parishioners, friends, and family. He was Uncle Butchie to his nieces and nephews and even got to baptize his niece’s children. He worked hard as a son, brother, uncle, and dad. He strived his whole life to make his family proud. He loved being a brother, and when the time came, he cherished the opportunity to be a father figure to his niece, Robbie.
His greatest joy was his daughter, Claire. He taught her everything he could and was the best dad Claire could ever have, want, or ask for. He had an impressive portfolio of dad jokes, threw the best sleepovers, came to every theater performance at Troupe, and embraced her friends, like they were family.
Bruce valued God, his family, his friends, kindness, knowledge, and finding humor in any situation. He didn’t value deadlines, taking things too seriously, or keeping up with the latest technology. He was a Mason. He was a regular at the places he loved and got to know the employees. He would park far from the door so others could have the better spots. He was humble and kind.
Bruce passed away on January 14, 2025 while his daughter, Claire, held his hand. He was preceded in death by his mother Belia, his father Wilfred, and his brother Billy. He is survived by his daughter Claire, his sister Beverly, and his brother Bobby. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Robbie, Alayna, Nick, Lily and Ronan, and his great-nieces and -nephew, Lucy, Max, and Opal. He is survived by his life-long friends, Chris (Uncle Tex) and Debbie Nicholson.
A service and celebration of life will be held at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Huntsville, Texas on Friday, February 14th at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice. You can keep his memory alive by spreading love and kindness, and always having a good (or bad) joke in your back pocket. And, of course, remember as Spock would say: “live long and prosper.”
