September 16th, 1941 - September 15th, 2026
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73: 26
Dr. James Calvin McComic, known as Jim, Dad or Pa, was born September 16, 1941, in Longview, Texas and called home to glory by his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, in Houston, Texas.
In April of 1951, Jim bowed his knee, repented of his sins, asked The Lord for forgiveness of his sins, and accepted Christ as his Savior. Since that time, his deepest love and greatest devotion were for his Lord and Savior. Second only to The Lord, was his love for his beloved wife Kay and their three children. The love he received from Christ was never contained within his own family. It overflowed into the lives of countless patients, friends, neighbors, church family, and even strangers. He did not simply care for his patients; he cared about people. His profession gave him countless opportunities to show compassion, listen intently, gently encourage, and quietly demonstrate the love of Christ. He did that even until the end with those he encountered at MD Anderson by praying with them and telling them about the Word of God and his Savior.
He attended The University of Texas at Austin and The University of Texas Dental School in Houston. Following graduation, he and Kay moved to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas where he served as a captain in the United States Army until 1969. They then moved back to the Houston area where he practiced dentistry for over 40 years. Kay was called home to glory last year after nearly 62 years of marriage.
Jim was a man of uncommon integrity. There was no great divide between the man people saw publicly and the man his family knew privately. His word meant something. It was his bond. If Dad told you he would do something, you could count on him to do it. And if he told you, “I’ll pray for you,” those were never polite words to end a conversation. He indeed prayed for you. He carried people and their needs before The Lord.
His faith was not merely something he professed; it shaped how he loved Kay, raised his children, practiced dentistry, treated people, kept his commitments, and faced life. The measure of his life was not found in his accomplishments, years practiced, or even the number of people he helped. It was found in people who experienced something of Christ’s love because they encountered him – a quiet testimony to Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in The Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
Jim is survived by his three children: Michelle King (husband Billy) of Magnolia, TX, Kimberly Hidalgo (husband Nick) of Houston, TX, and Chris McComic (wife Lauren) of Snow Hill, MD. Precious to him were his six grandchildren: Garrett Hidalgo of College Station, TX; Carter and Levi Hidalgo both of Houston, TX; Mack, Lincoln and Piper McComic all of Snow Hill, MD. Four cousins also survive him: Mary Ann Spencer of Gilmer, TX; Mike Newman (wife Sylvia) of Shreveport, LA; Jack Newman of California, and John L. Faulkinberry (wife Greta) of Bullard, TX. He joins his beloved wife Kay, parents Jim and Elizabeth McComic, and his dearly cherished maternal and paternal grandparents in glory.
A committal service will be held for Jim at 9:00 AM on Friday, October 16, 2026, at Houston National Cemetery with his son Pastor Chris McComic officiating. His earthy body will be laid to rest at Houston National Cemetery immediately after the committal service.
