Mary Paula Stewart (Rather) Sughrue was born on April 9, 1945, in Rayville, Louisiana and went home to be with the Lord on August 5, 2025, in Houston, Texas. She was the eldest of three born to John and Molly Stewart.

A proud graduate of Bellaire High School in Houston, Texas, Paula pursued her passion for the arts by attending Art School in Houston. Paula married John Taylor Rather in 1972 and the two of them spent many wonderful years between Houston and Waco Texas.  Her creative spirit was further manifested as a photography assistant working alongside her husband, a photographer, where they both dedicated their careers to helping others capture moments and memories through the lens.

Paula would marry again later in life to Robert Sughrue.   Throughout her life, Paula remained a steadfast and faithful Christian, drawing strength from her faith throughout life’s journey.  As Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.”

In her late years, Paula discovered joy in singing, sharing her love for music with those around her. She possessed a quick wit that brought smiles to those who spoke with her. Special, heartfelt admiration goes Cristina and the caring staff at Home Sweet Home for their amazing care for Paula in her final years. 

Paula is preceded in death by her parents, John and Molly, and husband, John Rather.   She is survived by her siblings, Lela and John, both of Colorado City, Texas and her second husband, Robert Sughrue.  She remembered fondly by her family and friends for the warmth she brought to their lives. She will be sorely missed yet know she has joined her Creator and is now at peace.

Paula will be laid to rest with her parents and grandparents at Forest Park Lawndale in Houston TX.
