God, country and family

Phillip “Phil” Alton Johnson Sr., affectionately known as “Papa” to many and “Bulldog” to a few, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2026, at the age of 91, in Spring, Texas. He is now reunited with his beloved wife of many years, Nancy “Cookie” Andrews Johnson, who passed away just over a year before him.

A proud patriot, gregarious salesman, and devoted family man, Phil left an indelible mark on everyone he met with his sharp wit, endless stories, and fierce convictions.

A Journey of Determination and Grit

Born on December 3, 1934, to Leith Samuel Johnson and Mary Elizabeth Humble Johnson, Phil grew up in Arkansas. He graduated from Warren High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville—instilling a lifelong, passionate (and “occasionally” critical) devotion to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Phil began his professional life as a math teacher in St. Charles, Arkansas, before transitioning to a role as a lab technician for Monsanto in El Dorado. It was there that his naturally outgoing personality caught the attention of his supervisor. When the lab closed, his boss took him under his wing, launching Phil into a highly successful, decades-long career in industrial sales. In the 1990s, Phil reinvented himself once again, becoming a licensed real estate broker specializing in land sales. He entered a "soft" retirement later in life, though truth be told, he never entirely stopped looking for the next great business opportunity.

God, Country, and Family

Phil proudly served his country in the Army National Guard. In his later years, he became well known as a passionate activist and patriot who deeply loved the United States, his home state of Arkansas, and his adopted home of Texas. Anyone who spent time with Phil knew they were bound to receive an enthusiastic lecture on his three ultimate pillars: God, country, and family. He could speak at length about the nuances of history, the U.S. Constitution, and American exceptionalism.

Yet, for all his strong opinions, Phil’s true masterpiece was the love he shared with his family and his dogs. He was a vibrant presence at any gathering, always ready with a joke or a funny story. He loved a good party, fishing, football, baseball, and making new friends.

Survivors and Legacy

Phil was preceded in death by his parents and his cherished wife, Cookie. His memory will be carried on by his family:

  • Son: Phillip “Phil” (“Boomer”) Johnson Jr.
  • Grandchildren: Inka Harvey and Niki Allinger
  • Great-Grandchildren: Aurora Lumi and Callum Allinger
  • Nieces and Nephews: Anne Sipes, Robert Bock, Don Bock, Jeff Andrews, and Amber Andrews Barton
  • Extended Family: A wide circle of loving extended family members and lifelong friends.

Phil’s laughter, warmth, and larger-than-life personality will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to share in his journey.
