Obituary for Carolyn "Universe" Verne Jackson Stephenson It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Carolyn "Universe" Verne Jackson Stephenson, who left this world on March 4, 2026, at the age of 84 in Houston, Texas. Born on January 13, 1942, Carolyn was a shining star in the lives of all who knew her, cherished for her adventurous spirit and warm heart.

 

Carolyn was predeceased by her loving parents, Donald Jackson and Hilda Eloise Wiggans Burrell, her brother, James Burrell Jr., and her beloved husband, Donald Stephenson. She will be deeply missed by her doting children, Slade and Shai Stephenson, as well as her siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and a multitude of friends. 

 

As an accomplished educator, Carolyn dedicated her life to shaping the minds of young students as a middle school English teacher at several schools across the Bronx, including schools 222 and 229. A proud alumna of Saint Augustine's College, where she earned her B.A. in English, and Lehman College, holding an M.A. in Education, Carolyn was a relentless advocate for education and learning, serving as a member of the NAACP and actively participating in her college choir. With a personality described as cheerful, confident, and kind, Carolyn had a unique ability to make everyone feel welcome and valued, making her popular wherever she went. She loved to travel, participate in book club discussions, indulge in true crime shows, and stay connected with her friends. Whether she was practicing yoga, doing water aerobics at the Y, or enjoying a good meal wherever one was offered, her zest for life and her noteworthy generosity shone brightly.

 

In lieu of flowers, her family kindly requests donations be made to one of her favorite charities, including the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, Obama Foundation, Doctors Without Borders, Feeding America, or UNCF.

 

As we gather to remember and celebrate the life of Carolyn "Universe" Verne Jackson Stephenson, we take comfort in her legacy of kindness and adventure. She will forever remain in our hearts, always our universe.
