Earl Reed "Buddy" McSpadden Jr.October 20, 1941 – July 13, 2025
Earl Reed "Buddy" McSpadden Jr., beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, went home to Heaven on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 20, 1941, Buddy was the son of Earl Reed McSpadden Sr. and Dorothy Suzanne Hiner. Born and raised in Houston, Texas, Buddy attended Reagan High School and graduated from Waltrip High School. His fearless approach to life developed early on as he started rodeoing at just four years old and continued competing until the age of 28. While he tried his hand at every event, bull riding remained his favorite. Even after hanging up his chaps, his passion for the sport never faded. He stayed close to the rodeo world by serving on the Calf Scramble Committee of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo and following every ride and roping event he could catch on TV.
From 1964 to 1966, Buddy proudly served his country as a tank driver in the U.S. Army and continued in the Army Reserves until 1970. During his military service, he was recognized for his sharpshooting skills, earning medals for his accuracy.
Buddy was a man of faith and a true jack of all trades. He loved to dance, teaching his four daughters by letting them stand on his feet when they were small. He had a passion for classic cars and a special place in his heart for antique trucks, which he spent countless hours restoring.
Buddy was a proud member of SPJST and the Retail Grocer’s Association. He enjoyed nothing more than a good BBQ, cheering for his favorite football team, and spending time with his family. Known for his dry wit, sharp mind, and generous spirit, Buddy never hesitated to help others—whether it was his own family or someone else’s in need.
He was married to the love of his life, Grace Darlyne McSpadden, until her passing in 2013. Together they built a family grounded in love, laughter, and steadfast support for one another.
He is survived by his four daughters: Suzanne Salley and Matthew, their children, Marissa and Marshal, their grandchildren Chandler and Carsen Popham; Melissa Miller and Craig; Kim Parks and Stephen, their children, Cody and Tucker, their grandchildren Cooper and Kinsley Jaeger; Candace Johnson and Vernon, children, Jake and Grace, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins, all of whom will forever treasure his wisdom, humor, and the example he set. He will be remembered not only as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, but as a remarkable human being who lived life fully.
A celebration of his life for his immediate family was previously held and an additional memorial service will be held at a later date for family and friends.
